Soldier sits on a rocky mountain at sunset with a US-flag backpack; large text reads Who's Got Your Six?

In the military, “watch your six” means watch what’s behind you. Your six is your blind spot—the place you can’t see and may not be able to defend by yourself.

During my years in the military, I used to say something that probably sounds strange to people who have never been in a combat zone:

Being in a combat zone was easy.

Now, I don't mean it was actually easy. It wasn't. There was danger, stress, and uncertainty.

But there was one thing that made it easier.

You knew who the enemy was.

You knew where the threat was coming from. You knew what you were watching for. And you knew the guy beside you was watching your six while you watched his.

Life outside the wire can be a different story.

The Enemy Isn't Always Obvious

As Christian men, we face battles every day.

But our enemy doesn't always come at us wearing a uniform or carrying a weapon.

Sometimes the battle comes through temptation.

Sometimes it's anger, bitterness, pride, or discouragement.

Sometimes it's a relationship that slowly pulls us away from God.

Sometimes it's a private struggle that nobody else knows about.

And that's what makes these battles so dangerous.

We don't always recognize the attack until we're already in the middle of it.

That's why we need someone watching our six.

You Were Never Meant to Fight Alone

The Bible says:

“Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.” ~ Ecclesiastes 4:9 KJV

God didn't design us to walk through life completely alone.

Men need other men who will tell them the truth.

Not men who simply tell us what we want to hear, but men who love us enough to say, “Brother, you're heading in the wrong direction.”

We need someone who will pray for us.

Someone who knows when we're struggling.

Someone who will stand beside us when life gets hard.

And sometimes, we need someone who will simply remind us that we're not alone.

That's what it means to have someone's six.

Two men sit on rocks at sunrise, one arm around the other, beside a wooden cross overlooking misty mountain valleys.

But Who's Got Yours?

So let me ask you a question.

Who's got your six?

Who knows what you're really dealing with?

Who can you call when temptation hits?

Who will pray with you when you're discouraged?

Who will speak God's Word into your life when your emotions are telling you something different?

And maybe the harder question is this:

Whose six are you watching?

Because being a Christian isn't just about receiving encouragement.

We're called to encourage one another.

“Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” ~ Galatians 6:2

There is probably a man sitting in a church pew this Sunday who looks like he's got everything together.

He'll shake your hand.

Smile.

Ask how you're doing.

But underneath that smile, he may be fighting a battle nobody knows about.

Maybe God has put you in his life for a reason.

Maybe you're supposed to watch his six.

And Then There's God

Here's the greatest thing we can remember.

Even when people fail us, God doesn't.

“I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” ~ Hebrews 13:5

Think about that.

The God who created you knows every battle you're fighting.

He knows the things you don't tell anybody.

He knows your weaknesses, your failures, your fears, and your doubts.

And He hasn't walked away.

When you can't see what's behind you, God can.

When you don't know where the attack is coming from, God does.

And when you feel like you're standing alone...

You're not.

So find yourself some godly brothers.

Get involved in a Bible-believing church.

Pray together.

Study God's Word together.

Be willing to let someone speak truth into your life.

And then turn around and do the same for somebody else.

Because real strength isn't pretending you don't need anyone.

Real strength is knowing when you do.

So, who's got your six?

Find your brothers.

Watch their six.

Let them watch yours.

And above all else, keep your eyes on Christ.

Because when everything else falls away, He will still be standing.

You are not alone.
